What Is the Series 66 Exam?

The Series 66 Exam, also known as the Uniform Combined State Law Examination, evaluates your understanding of investment concepts, client recommendations, ethical practices, and state securities laws.

Developed by the North American Securities Administrators Association (NASAA) and administered by FINRA, the examination combines qualification areas covered by the Series 63 and Series 65 exams.

Firm sponsorship is not required to take the Series 66 Exam. However, the Series 7 is a corequisite for registration purposes. Passing the required examinations does not automatically grant registration; candidates must also meet applicable state registration requirements.

Who Should Take the Series 66 Exam?

The Series 66 Exam is suited to:

• Individuals pursuing both broker-dealer agent and investment adviser representative registrations

• Financial advisor trainees whose roles require the Series 7 and Series 66

• Registered representatives expanding into investment advisory services

• Wealth management professionals whose responsibilities require these qualifications

• Candidates whose employers have identified the Series 66 as part of their registration requirements

Your employer or the applicable state securities regulator can help determine whether the Series 66 is appropriate for your intended responsibilities.

Why Is the Series 66 Important to Your Career?

The Series 66 Exam is an important qualification for professionals pursuing roles involving both securities transactions and investment advisory services. It assesses your understanding of investment recommendations, legal obligations, and ethical responsibilities.
